These succulents have a symmetrical rosette of stiff pointed leaf-like spines that come in a variety of sizes and colors. They are known for their geometrical patterns and low maintenance. It is a common to mistake agave for cacti. They are not related to cacti or aloe, despite their similarity in appearance, yuccas however, are a close relative to agaves!

and require direct to indirect light. It is important to always provide agaves with well drained soil as root rot can be a pesky problem. Agaves are also successful as potted plants indoors as well as outdoors. These plants thrive in hot dry climates like Arizona and are a perfect fit for Xeriscaping and low water maintenance! While this succulent is very good at surviving on little water it is best to consider a unique water program for each individual species. Overall be sure to let soil dry completely between waterings. Agave leaves will appear fleshy and plump with increased watering and some require much less than others. In general they are not extremely cold hardy and may need covering or protection from heavy frosts.

They are commonly referred to as the “century plant”. This name is often a misconception because most agaves produce a flowering shoot after 10 to 15 years, not 100. Agaves produces a tall stem from the center of the plant that bears a large number of tube-like flowers. These flowers are a fantastic way to attract hummingbirds and butterflies into your yard. During the years before producing its flowery “mast”, agaves store water and nutrients in its sword-like leaves to store up all the energy that it takes to grow. After the fruit is produced the original plant dies, but base shoots often become new plants perpetuating the presence of this interesting plant.

With all agave there are four parts of the plant that are useful and edible. The flowers, the leaves, the stalks and sap. Each agave can produce up to a pound of flowers during its final bloom season. The stalks are sweet when roasted and can be harvested like sugarcane. Agave nectar is collected from the sap in the leaves and used as a rich sugar substitute. Today Agave americana are one of the most familiar species of agave and are commonly used to make syrup and sugar. Agave tequilana also known as agave azul (blue agave) is used in the production of tequila. Several agave species also yield fiber which have been historically used for basket and rope weaving. As a cautionary warning, some agave sap has been reported to be a skin irritant and most agaves do produce a small sharp spine of some sort on the tip of its leaves.

There are over 500 different species of aloe, ranging dramatically in size and shape. Some species of aloes are miniature only reaching a few inches tall while other form massive singular rosettes or ground covering colonies numbering in the hundreds. They are marked by their large rosette of think fleshy sward-like leaves and clusters of tubular yellow, orange, or pink flowers. The nectar from aloes are a favorite among hummingbirds and butterflies!

Aloes also range in color form grey to pale blue, bright green and even striped patterns.

They make great indoor or outdoor plants as long as frosts are not in the forecast. Because aloe plants are native to warm dry climates they do not do well in cold temperatures. In general they like full sun or light shade. The soil provided should drain well and once established aloes are quite drought tolerant. In the maturing process regular watering should be given. After that aloes require very little water and be sure to let soil dry completely between waterings. Because aloes are succulent plants they store a large amount of water within its leaves and root system, water should be given minimally during the winter months. Aloes are low maintenance landscaping plants but benefit from annual fertilizing. They are not particularly fast growing and will rarely need repotting. However, they can be propagated during repotting by carefully dividing the root ball. Some aloes will assist the process by producing off-sets that can be potted individually. It has been reported that aloes are so hardy and forgiving that even after being uprooted and tossed aside for some time they are easily regenerated back to thriving in a very shot time. They also have a long lifespan, up to 25 years!

Aloe’s healing abilities have been traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Aloe Vera especially is known for its amazing medicinal properties. It can be used internally and externally for a variety of uses from digestive health, abrasions, sunburns, allergies, infections and even chronic fatigue and an added ingredient in many soaps and cosmetics. After breaking off part of its fleshy stem you can see the gel like liquid the plant produces. The cut segment will quickly heal over where it was sliced and retain its plumpness to stay green for several days. In a refrigerator a cut segment will keep for two or three weeks. Both the clear inner pulp and the resinous yellow aloin can be used to relieve skin issues, even poison ivy!

The gel can sooth minor burns almost immediately and help with skin conditions like eczema and ringworm.

Aloe Vera is reported to have antiseptic properties and a great item to have in any first aid kit! The juice is also used internally to help relieve digestive discomforts. The yellow sap of the aloe plant has also been used as a laxative ingredient. Not only do Aloe Vera provide a wide range of helpful healing uses it is a wonderful addition to your yard or Xeriscape. All aloes are great options for desert landscaping. Of the 500 species, very few of them are commonly found in cultivation.
