San Pedro Cactus

The San Pedro Cactus is a very ornamental cactus as well as it having medicinal uses in both human and veterinary medicine. Its stems are light to dark green (2 to 6 inches in diameter) with usually 6 to 8 ribs. Although it is sometimes spineless, some may produce short spines.

Archaeological studies have found evidence of use going back two thousand years. Its name, “San Pedro cactus” refers to “Saint Peter” cactus. The name is attributed to the belief that just as St. Peter holds the keys to heaven, the effects of the cactus allow users “to reach heaven while still on earth.” The San Pedro cactus contains a number of alkaloids, including the well-studied mescaline, among others. In the USA, it is currently legal to cultivate the San Pedro cactus for gardening and ornamental purposes, but not for consumption.
